Visual Shortcuts

In our world there are endless feelings, concepts, thoughts, ideas and stories. To understand any of them they each have to be explained.

Fair enough.

But, what if that idea needs to be referred to again? What do we do?

To create shortcuts, society tends to give things names, titles, definitions - all very wordy but necessary, of course?

There are other ways though - for instance using symbols. How universally useful is a simple image of a figure in a dress?

We all know that ‘a picture paints a thousand words’ - so why don’t we use this powerful insight more to represent more complex concepts?

This Visual Shortcuts project aims to distil some of my thoughts and reflections into photographic images - creating icons... shortcuts...symbols.

Even if I don’t use these images to communicate with anyone else, it’ll provide a useful visual vocabulary to help me navigate my own mind.

Instead of a complex idea needing to be clumsily explained & remembered over & over again all I’ll need to do is visualise it in my mind!

I’m pretty damned excited about this prospect of getting my thinking ordered in a visual manner - it feels like it is the nub of what this thing called art is all about.

Here (on the right) is an example...

This is simply a blue glass sitting on a patterned plate, which has been placed in the sunshine. The blue of the plate is reflected in the plate and vice versa.

It is like a relationship.

When we are with people who drain us, people who don’t seem to notice us or hurt us we are likely to be plain and dull. However, we too can sparkle, come alive and become colourful when we are with someone we connect with. The interaction is like sunshine bringing out our true colours.
